How to Dispute Errors on a Credit Report

One of the first things you should do is get a free copy of your credit report.  There are several places that offer this now including potentially your credit card company.  One of the easiest sites that we recommend AnnualCreditReport.com.  It’s totally FREE and will give you the report from each of the 3 major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and Transunion).  Get a copy of this report and then read it carefully!  You may be surprised to find incorrect information such as:

  • Address, phone number
  • Types of accounts (credit vs. home equity line)
  • Whether or not an account is in collections (this is important)
  • Number of recent inquiries (“hard” and “soft”)
